final exam(earth history and geologic time)

Years ago a large cloud of dust in space called a Nebula started to spin and come together. From this nebula our Sun formed. As the sun was forming smaller areas in the nebula began to also spin. These smaller areas swept up matter in the nebula and became the planets and their moons. 1"Earth formed 5 billion years ago, 3.7 billion years earths crust is solid, 3.5 billion years ago first life appears in the form of Bactria. 2.6 billion years ago oxygen is build up in the atmosphere, and 1 million years ago people ivloved." 2"Idex fossils are fossils used to define and identify geologic periods. They work on the premise that, although different sediments may look different depending on the conditions under which they were laid down, they may include the remains of the same species of fossil. If the species concerned were short-lived, then it is certain that the sediments in question were deposited within that narrow time period. The shorter the lifespan of a species, the more precisely different sediments can be correlated, and so rapidly evolving types of fossils are particularly valuable."

final exam (climate change)

1"As the light enters the atmosphere, some of it is scattered by air molecules or reflected from white clouds back into space. Since air is mostly transparent to visible light, much of the light that isn't reflected back into space goes through the atmosphere to Earth's surface". 2"Some of the light that makes it to the surface is also reflected back into space However, since the average albedo of Earth's surface is around 15%, most of the light that makes it to the surfaces is absorbed, warming our planet." Overall, slightly less than half of the the sunlight at the top of our atmosphere is absorbed by Earth's surface. Because there are natural sources of the various GHGs, the concentrations of these gases have fluctuated all throughout Earth's history. 2''However, human activities, especially ones associated with the industrial revolution, have increased anthropogenic emissions of several important GHGs dramatically since the mid 1800s." Various human activities have altered the natural mix of a broad range of gases that play a role in determining climate. Our focus here, however, will be on alterations in carbon dioxide and methane levels since pre-industrial times. 1"The effects of global warming are being felt around the world and unless international efforts are launched within the next 10 years, species will disappear and the Earth will be a vastly less habitable planet by the end of the century, according to NASA scientist James E. Hansen.''

equinox

The equinox happens twice a year. This means everyone on the planet gets exactly 12 hours of daytime and 12 hours of night time. This happens in spring and in fall. The earths tilt during the equinox is neglegable because the equator is directly facing the sun.

nasa blog

1. Light Curves- a. Astronomers use light being emitted from an object to measure things like a planet's mass and size.
b. Quiz grade: 100%
c.http://amazing-space.stsci.edu/
2. Dark Matter- a. Dark matter is the blackness we see in space. It is made up of W.I.M.P.s . They absorb a lot of light so that we can't actually see the matter.
b. Quiz grade: 100%
c. http://cdms.berkeley.edu/Education/DMpages/index.shtml
3. Black Holes- a. Black holes are up to 50 times more massive than our sun. They are possibly powerful enough to slow time in it's vortex and is definitely strong enough to suck in light.
b. Was no quiz, but I feel as though I would have aced it anyway.
